Technical Support/Application Engineer

IMMEDIATE EMPLOYMENT

We have an opening in our Oregon office for a Technical Support/Application Engineer to join our team working on embedded touchscreen modules. Reach offers a competitive compensation plan and a great working environment.

Since 1988, Reach Technology has become an industry leader in developing embedded touchscreen modules. We help companies shorten time-to-market and reduce risk and development costs. Reach also insulates users from changes in LCD availability, technology, and format.

Position Overview

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working with and helping customers. This person will wear many hats.

As our primary Technical Support person, you will answer calls and email from customers and groups within Reach Technology. Requests range from someone needing a cable part number to a customer needing help implementing a feature, to a multi-person, multi-week debug session trying to solve an issue. Technical Support will be your highest priority.

As an Application Engineer, you will generate application notes, maintain product documentation (Word and PDF files), and some web page content such as file packages with firmware, example code, documents and more. You will also maintain and make improvements to an existing code base, written in C, which runs on a microcontroller with an LCD. The product is a user-programmable Graphical User Interface and is “bare metal” (no OS).

In general, you will have autonomy about how to solve customer issues and improve the product. You will be expected to be self-directed and be able to work with minimal supervision. At times, this position can be highly interrupt-driven.

Our work environment is very casual. We are located in downtown Lake Oswego, where we have access to several restaurants, coffee shops, and nice areas for lunch-time walks. We tend to take walks for coffee in the mornings and the afternoons.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Answer technical support calls and email regarding our products.
  • Generate example applications and application notes for customers.
  • Implement fixes for bugs found by customers or in-house.
  • Propose and implement new features.
  • Release new firmware to manufacturing and web pages.
  • Maintain product documentation.

Skills and Abilities

  • Personality compatible with technical support – must be patient and good-natured. Customers are engineers, and interactions can be in-depth and detailed, not scripted or “Is it plugged in?”
  • Several years of experience developing and debugging embedded firmware.
  • Strong C programming background.
  • Experience with serial interfaces such as RS232, RS485, I2C, and SPI.
  • Able to follow product schematics.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with standard lab equipment (meters, oscilloscopes, etc.).

Additional Experience a Plus

  • Scripting (e.g., Python).
  • WordPress.
  • Linux programming.
  • PCB design tools (we use Altium Designer).
  • Arena Product Lifecycle Management or similar application.
  • CAD tools (we use Solidworks) for editing and creating documents.

Attributes Needed to Be Successful

  • Comfortable communicating with customers on the phone.
  • Strong writing competence for corresponding with customers via email.
  • Organizational skill and accuracy must be a natural talent.
  • Works cooperatively and successfully with others.

  • Effectively manages time, priorities, and paperwork.
  • Works with others with a “win-win” conclusion in mind.
  • Maintains and demonstrates a point of view that anticipates positive outcomes.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of firmware experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Verifiable references.
  • Able to pass a background check.
